Head Coach Trastoy
Gabriel Trastoy Named Head Baseball Coach of the UIC Eagle Rays
United International College is proud to welcome Gabriel Trastoy as the new Head Baseball Coach of the Eagle Rays. A record-setting catcher turned program-builder, Trastoy brings a rare combination of playing pedigree, recruiting reach, and head-coaching success to UIC, with a clear mandate: build a winning culture from the ground up.
A Player Who Set the Standard
Before he was a coach, Trastoy was one of the most disruptive defensive catchers in NAIA history. Over four years as the starting catcher at Loyola University New Orleans, he set the NAIA all-time record for runners caught stealing with 71 — a mark that speaks to elite arm strength, quick decision-making, and relentless preparation behind the plate. He anchored Loyola’s first-ever conference title team as the 2021 SSAC Conference Champions and helped the program reach multiple NAIA Opening Round Championship appearances (2021, 2022, 2024). That on-field leadership set the tone for everything that followed in his coaching career.
Building a Program from Scratch
Trastoy’s head-coaching résumé is defined by one word: builder. Selected as the inaugural head coach of an expansion SFCBL franchise with the Boca Raton Beach Boys, he took a roster with no prior history and turned it into a consistent winner — more than 50 victories across his first two seasons, with back-to-back All-Star Coach honors in 2024 and 2025. He owns every facet of the operation, from recruiting and roster construction to practice design, in-game strategy, and player development across hitting, pitching, defense, and base running. Each summer, he recruits and places 40-plus collegiate players from programs nationwide, giving him a recruiting network that runs deep into college baseball.
That network was forged during his time as a Graduate Assistant and Pitching/Catching Coach at his alma mater, Loyola University New Orleans, where he helped develop a pitching staff that ranked top-three in the conference in ERA and strikeouts, while the program advanced to the 2025 NAIA World Series. He mentored more than 30 student-athletes academically and athletically during that stretch — all while completing his MBA. Earlier in his coaching path, as an assistant coach and teacher at Downtown Doral Charter Upper School, he built structured throwing and strength programs for the varsity pitching staff and mentored 25-plus student-athletes, several of whom advanced to play collegiately.
Coaching Philosophy
Trastoy’s approach is built on culture, accountability, and skill-specific development, backed by data-informed game planning. He treats recruiting as a year-round discipline rather than a seasonal task, believing that strong programs are built in the off-season through direct, structured communication with both players and families — a philosophy he intends to bring to every level of the Eagle Rays program.
Education and Background
Trastoy holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing, both from Loyola University New Orleans, and is a graduate of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami. A Miami native, he is bilingual in English and Spanish and conversational in French, giving him a natural edge in connecting with players, families, and recruiting networks across borders.
From record-setting defender to championship-track program builder, Gabriel Trastoy now turns his attention to the UIC Eagle Rays — and to building a winning culture that starts the moment he steps on campus.
Welcome to UIC, Coach Trastoy.
